Afghanistan Set Up Diamond Jubilee Final Clash With Pakistan After Bangladesh Stumble Against Maldives

Afghanistan booked their place in the final of the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament after Bangladesh were held to a 1-1 draw by hosts Maldives in the final round of group-stage matches.

Bangladesh entered the match knowing that victory would strengthen their hopes of reaching the final, but a determined Maldivian side denied them all three points. The draw proved costly for the visitors, who failed to collect enough points to overtake Afghanistan in the standings.

As a result, Afghanistan secured one of the two places in Wednesday’s final, where they will face Pakistan in a highly anticipated title decider. Pakistan had already strengthened their position with an impressive campaign and now have the opportunity to lift the inaugural Diamond Jubilee trophy.

Afghanistan’s route to the final was built on crucial victories earlier in the tournament, including their opening win over Maldives. The Afghans have looked one of the tournament’s most balanced sides and will enter the final full of confidence.

For Bangladesh, the result against Maldives will be a major disappointment. Despite facing a Maldivian team already eliminated from contention, they were unable to find the winning goal required to keep their final hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Maldives ended their campaign with a single point from three matches. Although supporters had hoped for a stronger performance on home soil, the draw against Bangladesh at least allowed the hosts to avoid finishing the tournament without a point.

The Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament, organized to celebrate 75 years of Maldivian football, will now conclude with a Pakistan-Afghanistan final on June 10 at the National Stadium in Malé.
