Ashfaq Eyes 100th Cap as Maldives Prepare for Diamond Jubilee Showdown

Veteran striker Ali Ashfaq says the Maldives will focus on its own game as the national team prepares for the upcoming Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament on home soil- a competition that could also mark a historic personal milestone for the legendary forward.
Ashfaq is set to make his 100th international appearance for the Maldives if he features in the tournament, adding another major achievement to his illustrious international career.
The four-nation tournament will feature the Maldives alongside Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, with matches scheduled to begin on 1 June.
The Maldives will open its campaign against Afghanistan on 1 June, in what is expected to be one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament.
Speaking to the state media, ahead of the competition, Ashfaq highlighted the growing number of young players in the national squad and expressed optimism over the team’s chances.
“There are plenty of youngsters in the squad. I hope we can get a good result,” Ashfaq said.
The veteran forward emphasized that the team’s primary focus would remain on its own performances rather than worrying about opponents.
“We would rather focus on our game than thinking about the opponents,” he added.
The Diamond Jubilee Tournament is being organized to celebrate a major milestone in Maldivian football and is expected to attract strong support from local fans throughout the competition.
Ashfaq said playing in front of home supporters always provides an extra boost for the players.
“It always gives us a special motivation when playing in front of the home crowd. Hence, I expect a full stadium,” he said.
The tournament is expected to provide an important platform for the Maldives to blend experienced players with emerging young talent as the national side continues preparations for future international competitions.
