Imran Reflects on Golden Jubilee Memories as Maldives Prepares for Diamond Jubilee Tournament

With the Diamond Jubilee Tournament set to kick off in the Maldives, former national team captain Imran Mohamed has reflected on his own memories from the Golden Jubilee Tournament 25 years ago, describing the upcoming event as a celebration of the nation’s football journey and the enduring passion of its supporters.

Imran, who earned more than 100 appearances for the Maldives national team during an illustrious playing career, is now part of the coaching staff guiding the national side into the four-nation tournament featuring Maldives, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The tournament carries special significance for Imran, who was just 19 years old when he represented Maldives in the Golden Jubilee Tournament in 2000. On that occasion, Maldives reached the final but suffered heartbreak after losing to Sri Lanka in a penalty shootout.

Recalling those memories, Imran said the Diamond Jubilee Tournament highlights how far Maldivian football has come over the past 75 years.

“The Diamond Jubilee Tournament is an indication of the journey of Maldivian football and the love that our people continue to have for the game even after 75 years,”

Having experienced the atmosphere of a previous jubilee tournament as a player, Imran believes the latest edition will once again bring fans together in celebration of football.

He expects strong support for the national team throughout the competition and is hopeful that the stadium will be packed for the matches.

“I expect a house-full stadium and tremendous support from the people. The fans have always been a major part of our football story, and I believe they will once again come out in large numbers to support the team,” he said.

The Diamond Jubilee Tournament will serve as another milestone in the history of Maldivian football, bringing together four South Asian nations while celebrating the Maldives’ rich football heritage and the passion that continues to drive the sport forward.
