Maldives eliminated after historic 3-0 defeat to Pakistan

Maldives were eliminated from the tournament after suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Pakistan on Thursday evening, marking their first-ever loss to the South Asian rivals since 1991.

The defeat leaves Maldives rooted to the bottom of the standings with zero points from two matches, following their opening 1-0 loss to Afghanistan. With only one match remaining, the hosts can no longer qualify for the final.

Pakistan produced a disciplined and clinical performance to secure a famous victory, ending a winless run against Maldives that had stretched for more than three decades. The result also boosted Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the final, moving them to four points from their opening two matches.

For Maldives, the defeat represents another disappointing chapter in a campaign that began with high expectations on home soil. Despite enjoying support from the home crowd, the national team struggled to impose themselves and were punished by an organised Pakistan side that took their chances.

The result leaves Pakistan top of the standings with four points from two matches. Afghanistan are second with three points from one game, while Bangladesh have one point from their opening fixture. Maldives remain without a point after two matches.

Attention will now turn to Sunday’s fixtures. Afghanistan will face Pakistan in the afternoon in a match that could decide one of the finalists, while Maldives will take on Bangladesh in the evening in what will be their final match of the tournament.

Although qualification is no longer possible, Maldives will be aiming to restore some pride and avoid ending the competition without a point.
