Maldives Star Hamza Undergoes ACL Surgery, Set to Miss SAFF Championship

For nearly a year, Maldives international Hamza Mohamed battled through pain every time he stepped onto the pitch. Now, the nation’s leading footballer has revealed the full extent of the injury that has sidelined him and ruled him out of the upcoming SAFF Championship.

Hamza has successfully undergone surgery after an MRI scan in Sri Lanka confirmed injuries to both his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus.

The midfielder had been managing the injury throughout the season while seeking medical advice. Initial assessments suggested the problem was a cyst, prompting him to postpone surgery until after the campaign. However, further examinations following his arrival in Sri Lanka revealed the true severity of the injury, leading to the decision to undergo immediate surgery.

The setback means Hamza will miss the SAFF Championship, a tournament in which he was expected to play a key role for the Maldives national team.

“I’m gutted to miss the SAFF Championship, but I wish the national team nothing but the very best, I’ll be supporting the boys every step of the way.”

Despite the disappointment, the recovery process has already begun. Hamza remains determined to return stronger than ever, with his focus now firmly on rehabilitation and reclaiming his place on the pitch.
