Pakistan March Into Final With Commanding Win Over Afghanistan

Pakistan booked their place in the final of the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament after securing a convincing 2-0 victory over Afghanistan at the National Stadium in Malé on Sunday evening.
The Green Shirts continued their impressive run in the tournament with goals from Umar Nawaz and Harun Hamid, sealing top spot in the standings and becoming the first team to qualify for Wednesday’s final.
The victory marks Pakistan’s first appearance in a senior international tournament final since 1991.
Coming into the match with four points from their opening two games, Pakistan knew a win would guarantee their place in the final. Afghanistan, who had defeated hosts Maldives in their opening match, were also aiming for a crucial result to keep their title hopes alive.
The match began at a high tempo, with both sides looking to take control of possession. Pakistan gradually settled into the contest and created the better opportunities, forcing Afghanistan onto the defensive for long periods.
The breakthrough eventually arrived through Umar Nawaz, whose goal gave Pakistan a deserved lead and further boosted their confidence. Afghanistan attempted to respond but struggled to break down a disciplined Pakistani defense that has now kept clean sheets in all three of its tournament matches.
As Afghanistan pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Pakistan struck again through Harun Hamid to put the result beyond doubt. The second goal effectively ended Afghanistan’s hopes of a comeback and sparked celebrations among the Pakistani players and supporters in attendance.
The result capped an outstanding league campaign for Pakistan. They opened the tournament with a goalless draw against Bangladesh before recording a historic 3-0 victory over hosts Maldives, ending a 35-year wait for a win against the island nation. Pakistan then followed up with another impressive display against Afghanistan to finish top of the table.
For Afghanistan, the defeat leaves their qualification hopes dependent on the outcome of the final league match between Maldives and Bangladesh. Despite a promising start to the tournament, they were unable to match Pakistan’s intensity and quality in the decisive encounter.
Pakistan will now turn their attention to Wednesday’s final, where they will face either Bangladesh or Afghanistan in a bid to lift the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament trophy.
