Urbányi: Diamond Jubilee Tournament Will Show How Far Maldives Have Progressed

Maldives head coach István Urbányi says the upcoming Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament will be a key opportunity to measure the national team’s growth as the country celebrates 75 years of football.

“These are the opportunities for us to see how we can progress,” Urbányi said ahead of the tournament, where Maldives will face Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh in Male’.

The Hungarian coach believes the four-nation tournament comes at an important stage for the national team, with Maldives continuing preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the SAFF Championship.

The Diamond Jubilee Tournament, organized by the Football Association of Maldives, will run from June 1 to June 10 and is being held to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Maldivian football.

Maldives will open their campaign against Afghanistan before taking on Pakistan and Bangladesh in the group stage. The top two teams will qualify for the final.

Urbányi has previously highlighted the importance of balancing experienced national team players with emerging young talent as Maldives aim to rebuild and compete strongly on the regional stage.
